Singaporean Hawker Food - Oyster Omelette 蚝煎

November 14th, 2008 · No Comments

Last night, I went over to the Tays for dinner. It was lovely! Duck noodles, oyster omelette and nasi lemak. What more can I ask for?

Here’s a video of Angela cooking the 蚝煎 (O-jian in Hokkien). Enjoy!

I’m addicted to youtube videos! Especially the cooking ones. Found this today. Gerry is so entertaining. His voice cracks me up, in a good way. (: Enjoy!

Standing Order, Edinburgh

November 4th, 2008 · No Comments

If you’re looking for cheap, good food in Edinburgh, Standing Order on George Street is the last place to go. Yes it is relatively cheap, £7.69 for 2 main meals (limited choice) and £5.10 for beer & burger, but considering the quality of ingredients used, one will be better off stopping by Tesco and buying three days worth of frozen meals. I ordered the beef burger (100% Brithish beef) topped with bacon and cheese (+£1), it was dissapointingly un-juciy. ): One would also think that melting the cheese is the least any dignified “chef” can do… But nope! Straight out of the bag, cold, hard mozerella. Servings were pretty measly too. The ambience, did however, make up for my unsatisfactory meal. The interior was quite Victorian (whatever that means), with high ceilings and large windows, very much like the old-fashion, posh, reading/sitting rooms you see on TV. We sat there for close to 2.5 hours talking…

As an alternative to cheap and good food, I would reccommend Red Fort on 10 Drummond Street. You can either go for the buffet or a 3 course lunch plus a drink for £6. ANDDDD, students get a discount, 10%, I believe. Or just drop by my favourite place of all time, Pie Maker (38 South Bridge). You’d spend close to or less than £3 for 2 pies/ Pie + Dessert… Another story for another time…
